With
all of the creatures we start the same way, a clay sculpt. This
is moulded in fibreglass or silicone. We
then produce cores within these moulds. From this we can then
cast foam or silicone skins for the dinosaurs. The cores are then
reproduced to create the skeletons for the creatures.
Cable
or servo motors are used to control the moving parts. The head
& jaw movements were controlled via the puppeteers arm &
hand. This was the basic approach we used for most of the dinosaurs.
Although some of the time we had to change this approach due to
size or shooting requirements. For Postosuchus we created a full
size skull & an animatronic scale model (sculpt of scale model,
above right).

Andrew
Hunt on set with the scale version of Postosuchus. This creature
had head, neck, jaw, tongue eyes, eyelid, nostril, breathing,
feet & tail movement. All of the limbs were jointed &
pinned down to the set. It was one of the most involved puppets
we built for the show.

For
this episode we were asked to create the different versions of
the giant sauropod, Diplodocus. We built a full size side of Diplodocus
body which had movement in the legs & was able to breath.
We also built several versions of the sauropodlets, a corpse version,
a breathing posable version, a front half egg hatching version
& a close up animatronic version.

Pterosaurs
also feature within the show. We built three versions of Rhamphorhynchus.
A complete corpse, a complete posable body & a close-up version.
This was too small to be built as a hand puppet. So the neck &
head movements were cable controlled while the jaw was radio controlled.

Among
the models we produced for this episode were Ornithocheirus,
a giant pterosaur with a 40 foot wingspan. For this
creature we built a full size posable corpse, a
fishing head & a close-up animatronic head.
Utah-Raptor (above right) was built as a close up
animatronic head & leg.

This
was one of the first creatures we were to tackle. For episode
5, we built a full Leaellynasaura corpse & an animatronic
close-up version. We also constructed a burnt corpse version for
Episode 2.

For
the final episode we were asked to create the king
of the dinosaurs, T-Rex. Here, Andrew Hunt is sculpting
the Juvenile T-Rex close up head. This Juvenile Torosaurus
(above right) was one of T-Rex's victims.
